On
Sunday, the presidency released photos of Akpabio in a meeting with President
Muhammadu Buhari in London. Buhari is currently on a 10-day vacation in London.
Thisday
Newspaper, in its report, said:
Sources within the PDP, which appeared not
to be disturbed by the development (Akpabio leaving the party), dismissed
Akpabio as one big mole it had to deal with over time, noting that he has
divulged virtually all the party’s plans and strategies to the opposition in an
alleged attempt to secure protection from prosecution.
The
Thisday report also alleged that the APC-led government had “shown Akpabio a
dossier on some of his alleged atrocities as governor, including monies said to
have been stashed in different places, through the EFCC.”
“Joining
the ruling party was alleged to be a condition given to him to avoid
prosecution for corruption. The former governor was said to have reluctantly
accepted the condition,” the report added.
Thisday
also quoted a PDP source who said:
But because his hands, too, are not clean,
they were able to box him to a very bad corner. His options, we believe, were
limited. But he had done so much damage to us. He was our biggest mole. He held
strategy meetings with us and went back to divulge all to the APC just to save
face. We won’t miss him; he can go.
However, the one thing that his defection
will prove to Nigeria is the hypocrisy of the ruling party. We will see their
reaction and that of their supporters, who almost killed those who left the APC
to join the PDP recently. We are waiting to see the fallout and this is,
indeed, interesting.
