UBA restates commitment to African expansion

The United Bank for Africa Plc has restated its commitment to African expansion as it celebrates its 10 years of operations in Ghana, one of the 18 subsidiaries outside Nigeria.

According to a statement by the pan-African lender, Ghana is important to the UBA Group being the first foray of the bank outside Nigeria.

The Group Managing Director, UBA Group, Phillips Oduoza, was quoted as saying, “The opening of UBA Ghana in January 2005, represented UBA’s ambition of becoming the bank for Africans regardless of continent of residence”

Oduoza said the Board of Directors of the bank held its annual board meeting in Accra for the first time to show its commitment to the pan-African agenda.

The Chairman, UBA, Mr. Tony Elumelu, was quoted to have said, “We do banking the way we do, because we want to unite Africa to the world”.

The statement noted that Elumelu, along with a delegation of UBA Ghana and UBA Group, had an audience with President John Mahama of the Republic of Ghana during which they held discussions on how the bank could partner the Ghanaian government to boost her economy.

The UBA board members also had a reading session at Accra Academy as part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility project: the Read Africa Initiative, which seeks to improve reading culture among African youths.
